The SEH Board of Directors named five new Company Associates—Brian Bergstrom, AIA, LEED-AP, CDT; Karen Cavett, PE; Rob Ekstrom, AIA, El, LEED-AP BD+C, NCARB; Heather Kienitz, PE; and Shawn McMahon, PE.
These individuals were selected based on their continuous commitment to the Company’s success and their sustained and successful job performance. They are trusted and respected by clients and well-regarded by their peers.
Brian is a senior architect and has served many roles in his years at SEH from his early days in a technical support role to becoming a technical expert in fire station facility design. He is responsible for managing, designing, drafting and providing code analysis, environmental review and construction administration on municipal, recreational, educational facilities and housing and redevelopment authority (HRA) projects. Brian has worked on projects ranging from small-scale building renovations, to mid-sized multi-faceted public works facilities, to large-scale performing arts theaters. These projects are often designed and constructed with environmentally sustainable objectives in mind.
Karen is the central region practice center leader for wastewater. She has extensive experience as a water and wastewater engineer providing planning and engineering services for water and wastewater treatment facilities including new construction, rehabilitation and expansion projects. Karen regularly presents for both water and wastewater forums. Topics have included; biological nutrient removal, operation and maintenance of stabilization ponds, wastewater and water upcoming regulations, permit compliance options, basics of preliminary treatment and clarification, HDPE Liners, etc.
Rob is a project architect with extensive experience in architectural design and structural engineering. He has project experience on a wide variety of building types including criminal justice, municipal, federal, education, housing and commercial/retail facilities. He has worked on several projects that have achieved sustainable certification including Davey Jackson Elementary (LEED Gold), Fort Carson Dining Facility (LEED Gold), Denver Police Crime Lab (LEED Gold), Depot Square (Tracking for LEED ND & LEED for Homes Gold), Rocky Ford Public Safety Building (Tracking for 2 Green Globes).
Heather has dedicated herself to developing highly inclusive, context-sensitive solutions for built environments for the past 19 years. She leads multimodal traffic engineering projects for area plans, preliminary designs and final designs. Heather is particularly experienced with the retrofit, reconstruction or new construction of bicycle and pedestrian facilities and enhancements. A natural collaborator, she believes in working closely with agency and community stakeholders to develop multimodal transportation solutions.
Shawn is a project manager and planner experienced in design and construction of municipal projects and airport infrastructure projects. His expertise includes design and construction of airport infrastructure including runways, taxiways, aprons, hangars, airport buildings and navigational aids. He has knowledge in grant acquisition and state and federal funding. Shawn is also the chief corporate pilot for SEH. He flies a twin engine Piper Navajo and a Beechcraft King Air 200 across the Midwest to support clients’ needs. He has over 3,000 flight hours, most of which come from six years of service in the United States Air Force as a C-17A Globemaster Instructor Pilot.
