Redefining a Downtown Urban Street into a Destination

Challenge

The Nicollet Mall, a 12-block stretch of entertainment, office, transportation and pedestrian activity in Downtown Minneapolis was in need of urban renewal. The City set out to replace the thoroughfare infrastructure and rebrand the area as a destination for employees, residents and visitors to live, work and play.

Solution

Because of the magnitude of the project, the City hired SEH as the construction management team during the preliminary design stage. This enabled SEH to work with the City and design team on cost estimating, constructability and durability reviews, staging and utility coordination early on in the design process. This also helped the team anticipate potential schedule and phasing issues.

SEH and the City implemented a potholing program to identify underground utility conflicts during design in order to assist in design decisions and relocation requirements by the utility companies. In the end, the Nicollet Mall project came in on time and within budget, giving “Minnesota’s Main Street” a bold new beginning for 2018.
