The Nicollet Mall, a 12-block stretch of entertainment, office, transportation, and pedestrian activity in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, was in need of urban renewal. The City of Minneapolis set out to replace the thoroughfare infrastructure and rebrand the area as a destination for employees, residents and visitors to live, work and play.
Because of the magnitude of the project, the City hired SEH as the construction management team during the preliminary design stage. This enabled SEH to work with the City and design team on cost estimating, constructability and durability reviews, staging and utility coordination early on in the design process. This helped the team anticipate potential schedule and phasing issues. SEH and the City of Minneapolis implemented a potholing program to identify underground utility conflicts during design to assist in design decisions and relocation requirements by the utility companies. In the end, the Nicollet Mall project came in on time and on budget, giving “Minnesota’s Main Street” a bold new beginning for 2018.
